The mission of the Lira Ensemble is to bring the best of Polish Culture into American life.

The Lira Ensemble is the only professional performing arts company in the United States specializing in Polish music, song, and dance. The name of the company, "lira," is the Polish word for "lyre," a traditional symbol of music. The Ensemble's performing groups present the music of Poland, sung in the original language, and Polish folk and court dances, with narratives in English. The Lira company consists of The Lira Singers, female vocal ensemble, The Lira Symphony, The Lira Dancers, Lira Piano Quintet, Lira String Quartet, Lira Chamber Chorus, and Lira Children's Chorus - "Dzieci". The Feast Day of Our Lady of Czestochowa, Patron Saint of Poland

We are delighted to honor Our Lady by singing two Masses featuring Marian hymns – and you are invited.

Thursday, August 26th – 7pm – The Lira Singers Trio –  Feast Day Mass at St. Issac Jogues Church, 8149 West Golf Road in Niles , IL .  Lots of free adjacent parking.

 Sunday, August 29th – 10:15am – The Lira Singers Quartet – Mass and Dedication of the Icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa at Madonna della Strada Chapel on the Lake Shore Campus of Loyola University on Sheridan Road, east of Broadway.  Parking is free in the campus parking structure.  The chapel is on the lake shore.

This dedication is another example of Loyola’s commitment to the Polish-American community.  The university now offers a minor in Polish Studies and Lira has been artist-in-residence for the past 15 years.

 The Music Ministry of St. John the Evangelist Church in St. John , Ind ia na will present:  “Hail Mary! A Concert of Polish and American  Marian Hymns” as part of its Laudate Concert Series.  The church is at 10701 Olcott Avenue in St. John , Ind ia na . Tickets are $15.00 in advance sale and $20.00 at the door. The Lira Ensemble joins the people of Poland, Polish Americans, and people of Polish ancestry around the globe in mourning the loss of the President of Poland and First Lady, the leaders of Poland and all who died in the tragic airplane crash in Russia.

The Lira Ensemble has received arts jobs preservation support from the Illinois Arts Council made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts through funds allocated from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Bring the Lira Ensemble to your school, library or museum. Artists from the ensemble are available to present programs and have been featured recently at the Elmhurst, Des Plaines, Glen Ellyn and Addison Public Libraries. In addition, Lira has assembly programs available for students of all ages. Call Susan Smentek, Assistant Manager of the Lira Ensemble for information at 773-508-7040. 

The Lira Dancers will audition male dancers in August, 2010 for work during the Fall season. Interested dancers should call or email the Lira office for further information. 773-508-7040

The Lira Ensemble has recently performed at events marking the 70th Anniversary of the creation fo the Polish Underground State and the Home Army during WWII. Following an event held on October 11, many people called the Lira office looking for a copy of the remarks given by Marek Suszko, Ph. D., of the Department of History, Loyola History Chicago.
